How to Paint Furniture without Sanding

Creating a beautiful finish on a piece of furniture is easy when you have a few skills under your belt and use a HomeRight Super Finish Max paint sprayer. Today, I’ll share how to paint furniture without sanding to save time. One of the purposes of sanding before painting is to remove blemishes on the surface to be painted. Another, is to prepare the surface for the paint to bind to. If the item you’re paint doesn’t have deep surface scratches, you can easily skip the sanding! Follow the below steps for a great DIY painted project.

Materials Needed

• HomeRight Super Finish Max Paint Sprayer
• HomeRight Spray Shelter
• Paint
• Drop cloth
• Paint
• Painter’s tape
• Plastic, to tape furniture
• Blocks of wood or paint pyramids

Step One

Inspect the furniture piece for any damage and repair if needed Check drawers, sides, feet and surfaces. Remove the drawer knobs and any other hardware at this time. Place hardware in a baggie or cup to keep all of the pieces together.

Step Two

Second hand furniture needs a thorough cleaning inside and out. The surfaces intended for painting need to be deglossed and degreased so the new paint sticks to the surface. I used Simple Green for this project. Spray undiluted simple green and wipe it off with a clean cotton painter’s rag. Spray and wipe each area until the painter’s rag doesn’t pick up any more dirt.

Step Three

Tape off areas to protect from paint now. If there are any surfaces that won’t be painted, tape them off now. When painting drawer fronts, sliding the bases into a plastic bag saves time.

Step Four

Spray on paint in two coats. I used the HomeRight Super Finish Max paint sprayer with the green tip to spray a charcoal chalky finish paint for these nightstands. Since the paint was extremely thick, I diluted it with water until I had the consistency of thin latex paint. Most furniture pieces do not need to be primed before painting them.

Step Five

Remove protective tape. Remove the protective painter’s tape and plastic when the second coat is dry to the touch. Do not allow the paint to sit and become fully dry or you may have a hard time pulling off the tape.

Step Six

Replace the knobs or hardware. I chose to use oversized wood knobs to give my two nightstands an updated look
